Music Theory: Cracking the Code

What is this?

Music Theory: Cracking the Code is a self-paced online program for adults who want to finally understand the “why” behind the music they play — reading with real confidence, recognizing patterns instead of memorizing note-by-note, and making sense of the theory that ties it all together.

It’s built for adults specifically. Whether you’re brand new to reading music or you’ve been playing for twenty years and just realized there’s more you could understand, this program meets you exactly where you are

Is this instead of studio lessons?

Not at all — and if you’re already one of my in-person students, I want to be clear about this: your lessons aren’t going anywhere.

For many adults, working one-on-one at the piano together is exactly the right fit, and that’s not changing. Music Theory: Cracking the Code is a different kind of tool for a different kind of moment — for the times you want to go deeper into the “why” on your own schedule, outside of lesson time, at your own pace.

Some of my studio students use both. Some just come to lessons. Both are completely fine — this is simply here for anyone who wants it, whenever they want it.

Who tends to find this helpful

  • Adults who can play but have always felt shaky reading music
  • Longtime players who’ve never quite learned how theory actually works
  • Anyone who’s felt embarrassed asking “basic” questions about music
  • People who want to learn at their own pace, without needing a weekly lesson slot

What’s inside

The program walks through seven stages, from the very basics of reading music up through modes, harmony, and seeing the “big picture” of a piece — each one building on the last, so nothing ever feels like too big a jump.

This is a growing program — new modules are added regularly. Jazz harmony and more complex chord voicings are coming in a future expansion.

A note from Karen

I’ve spent over 25 years teaching piano, directing church music, and helping adults find their way back to music with confidence. My own theory training went deep into jazz — starting in college and continuing through study with other jazz musicians since then. This program is everything I wish I could hand every adult learner on day one — without a single lesson slot required.
